The laptop designed to be disassembled, upgraded, and endlessly repaired
In short: Most modern laptops are designed to be replaced, not repaired. Framework flips this script by building modular hardware where every component—from the ports to the processor—is swappable. It is a direct challenge to planned obsolescence, offering a
In 2020, Nirav Patel founded Framework Computer, Inc. with a team of experts from companies like Apple and Oculus to champion the 'right to repair' movement. By 2021, they launched the Framework Laptop 13, a device designed for intergenerational upgradability. Unlike standard laptops, Framework's modular design allows users to swap out parts like RAM, storage, and even the motherboard, ensuring the device can evolve with new technology rather than becoming e-waste.
The hardware architecture centers on an expansion card system. Rather than permanent ports, the device uses indented spaces for swappable modules supporting HDMI, USB-A, SD cards, DisplayPort, and solid-state drives (reaching 1 TB per slot). A bespoke keyboard and a dedicated GPU expansion bay, capable of housing an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070, further enhance the Framework Laptop 16. To support this ecosystem, the company launched a Developer Program, releasing open-source CAD templates and reference designs for third-party creators.
Framework also addresses the software side of longevity. While they use proprietary UEFI firmware from Insyde Software, they have open-sourced their embedded controller (EC) firmware. They have also worked to improve Linux compatibility, acknowledging past shortcomings in software update cycles. By providing a Marketplace for official parts and allowing third-party vendors to sell components, Framework aims to create a sustainable hardware lifecycle where a single chassis can host multiple generations of internal components.
