In short: In the desperate final years of World War II, Japan developed a fighter that could think for itself. The Shiden Kai featured a unique system that automatically deployed combat flaps during tight turns, allowing it to outmaneuver Allied aircraft without requiring extra pilot input.

The Shiden Kai (Allied codename GEORGE) was born from a radical pivot in Japanese naval aviation. It began as the N1K1 Kyofu, a floatplane designed for offensive operations where no airstrips existed. However, as Japan's position weakened, engineers reworked the design into a land-based fighter. This transition involved removing the main floats, installing retractable landing gear with long legs, and upgrading to the powerful but temperamental 2,050 hp Homare engine.

The aircraft underwent significant refinement shortly after its first flight in late 1942. By extending the fuselage and shifting the wing underneath, engineers shed 550 lb (250 kg) of excess mass. The aircraft achieved a roll rate of 82° per second at 240 mph, while hitting roughly 370 mph at an altitude of 18,000 ft. It was armed with four 20mm cannons, making it a formidable opponent against American F6F Hellcats and F4U Corsairs.

The most sophisticated feature was its unique automatic flap system. When the plane sensed particular speeds and G-forces during sharp turns or loops, a mercury switch connected to the pitot-static system triggered flaps to drop by 30 degrees automatically. This increased lift and lowered the stall speed instantly. Once the maneuver ended, the system retracted them automatically, significantly reducing the pilot's workload in high-stress combat.

While Japan produced over 1,007 of these fighters, they were primarily entrusted to elite units like the 343rd Kokutai. Led by Minoru Genda—a key figure in the Pearl Harbor planning—these experienced pilots used the Shiden Kai's advanced technology to hold their own against superior Allied numbers until the final months of the war.
