Why Volkswagen’s ambitious electric SUV falls short of its mass-market promise

Volkswagen claims the ID.4 is its most significant launch since the Beetle, aiming to bring electric vehicles to the masses. However, this review explores why the current reality of its pricing and charging infrastructure fails to match the high expectations set by the brand.

The ID.4 enters the competitive crossover market with an 82 kWh battery pack, providing 250 miles of range and 201 horsepower. While its permanent magnet synchronous motor is capable of reaching 16,000 RPM, the vehicle struggles to meet the goal of affordability. With a starting price near $40,000, even after a $7,500 tax credit, it remains expensive, and AWD models can exceed $50,000 with options.

Beyond the cost, the charging experience is a major point of friction. Despite being a Volkswagen-funded initiative, the Electrify America network currently lacks the seamless integration expected by users. A company representative indicated that features like 'Plug & Charge' and improved auto-navigation are slated for release later in the year, likely by the fall.
