Volkswagen’s electric reimagining of the iconic microbus has finally reached American shores. While its driving dynamics and powerful motors promise a new era for the electric minivan, a frustratingly complex interface threatens to overshadow the sheer engineering joy of this 91 kWh powerhouse.
The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz marks a significant milestone as the first fully-electric minivan option available in the United States market. Engineered to bridge the gap between retro charm and modern utility, the vehicle utilizes a substantial 91 kWh battery pack to power its electric drivetrain. Depending on the configuration chosen, drivers can opt for a Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) setup or an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variant.
The mechanical distinction between these two versions is substantial. The RWD model relies on a single rear motor producing 282 horsepower, while the AWD version adds a front motor to reach a combined 335 horsepower. Despite the increased power in the AWD configuration, the estimated range remains remarkably similar, with the RWD model estimated at 234 miles and the AWD model at 231 miles. This narrow margin suggests that the added complexity of the second motor does not significantly compromise efficiency.
However, the transition to a digital-first cabin presents a significant hurdle for users. While the driving experience itself is described as exceptional, the vehicle's interface and infotainment systems are noted for being painful to navigate. This tension between high-performance hardware—capable of impressive highway cruising—and a cumbersome software experience defines the current state of the ID. Buzz. For a vehicle priced at an MSRP of $67,045.00 for the 1st Edition RWD, the usability of the interior controls is just as critical as the horsepower under the hood.
