Before the Starship launch site at Boca Chica could support heavy flight testing, SpaceX had to address the unstable ground. This video explains the engineering necessity of building a giant dirt pile to prevent future facilities from sinking into the soft soil.

The SpaceX South Texas Launch Site, located near South Padre Island, sits on ground that requires careful preparation to support massive structures. Rather than allowing the site to sink over time, engineers used a temporary, large-scale soil surcharge to stabilize the foundation.

This process involved hauling in a significant volume of dirt to compress the earth before construction. After nearly two years of preparation, most of this soil was removed for disposal, leaving behind a stable base capable of supporting the Starship program's ambitious test launches.
