How two 17th-century cavalry units evolved into a modern British armoured reconnaissance regiment
In short: Formed in 1959 by combining two historic dragoon guards, the 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards stands as the most senior line regiment in the British Army. From peacekeeping in the Balkans to combat roles in Iraq and Afghanistan, this unit has consistently adapted its tactics to meet shifting global security challenges.
The 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards emerged from the 1959 amalgamation of the 1st King's Dragoon Guards and the 2nd Dragoon Guards, both of which traced their origins back to 1685. As an armoured reconnaissance regiment, its primary function involves gathering intelligence and maintaining battlefield awareness. For much of its early existence, the unit maintained a presence in Germany with the British Army of the Rhine, while also conducting regular rotations through Northern Ireland.
Beyond its European commitments, the regiment has operated globally, including deployments to Borneo, Aden, and Lebanon. During the 1990s and early 2000s, the unit saw extensive service in the Balkans, participating in peacekeeping missions in Bosnia and Kosovo. Its involvement in the Gulf War in 1990 earned the squadron the battle honour Wadi al Batin. Later, the regiment played a significant role in the Iraq conflict, serving multiple tours between 2003 and 2006, which included overseeing the transfer of Al Muthanna province to local control.
The regiment's operational focus shifted toward Afghanistan, where it served in Helmand Province during 2008-09 and 2011-12. In recent years, the unit has continued to evolve, transitioning to a light cavalry role and utilizing Jackal vehicles. It remains active in international security, such as its 2018 deployment to Poland to support NATO's armoured spearhead. Domestically, the regiment maintains strong ties to its roots, often associated with Wales and supported by the Firing Line Museum at Cardiff Castle.
