In short: From the jungles of Indochina to the mountains of Corsica, the 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment has served as the spearhead of French rapid reaction. Discover the complex lineage of this elite force, born from the merger of battle-hardroned battalions and shaped by decades of global deployment.

Within the French Army's Foreign Legion, the 2e Régiment étranger de parachutistes (2e REP) stands as the only airborne unit. Its origins are a complex tapestry of mid-century conflicts. The unit's lineage traces back to the 2nd Foreign Parachute Battalion (2e BEP), which was created on October 1, 1948. This battalion saw intense combat in Indochina, fighting through territories like Cambodia, Cochinchine, and Annam. During the heavy fighting at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, the 2e BEP was briefly merged with the 1st Foreign Parachute Battalion to form a single Foreign Marching Battalion.

The regiment as it is known today was officially established on December 1, 1955, when the 2e BEP was enlarged. This transition followed the dissolution of the 3rd Foreign Parachute Regiment (3e REP), whose members were integrated into the 2e BEP. The unit's history is marked by significant sacrifice; during its time in Indochina, the battalion lost 1,500 legionnaires, including its commander, Commandant Barthéléme Rémy Raffali.

Following the Algerian War, the regiment underwent a significant relocation. Between 1965 and 1967, the 2e REP moved from Algeria to its current home at Camp Raffalli near Calvi, Corsica. Under the leadership of Colonel Caillaud, the regiment transitioned into an elite para-commando force, with companies specializing in tasks such as mountain, amphibious, and anti-tank combat. Since 1970, the regiment has been a mainstay of French external operations, participating in missions in Chad, Lebanon, Rwanda, and more recently, the Afghan theatre in 2010.

The regiment's identity is also captured in its insignia, created in Cambodia in 1949. It features an Eastern winged dragon, a nod to its Asian roots, set within a triangular shape representing an open parachute, centered by the Legion's colors.
