In short: The 3rd Special Forces Group has a fragmented history of activation and deactivation. From training armies in the 1960s to securing oilfields in Iraq, this unit’s specialized mission profiles have evolved alongside the shifting landscapes of global conflict.

The 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) began operations at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, on 5 December 1963, with an initial focus on Africa and the Middle East. Throughout the 1960s, this unit provided training to military forces in Ethiopia, Mali, Jordan, and the Congo. However, following the 'Vietnamization' of the conflict, the group was inactivated in 1969, with its members transferred to other units.

The group was reactivated in 1990, with its area of responsibility eventually expanding to include the Caribbean and the Greater Middle East. During the Gulf War, its 1st Battalion deployed to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, for three months, conducting reconnaissance and sabotage in Iraq and Kuwait. By 2015, a SOCOM directive established the group's primary area of operations as Africa, specifically within the AFRICOM area of responsibility.

The unit's combat history is marked by intense engagements, such as the 2003 Battle of Debecka Pass, where 26 Green Berets secured a vital Iraqi crossroads to protect Kirkuk oilfields. Ten personnel from ODA 3336 earned Silver Stars for their conduct at the Battle of Shok Valley in 2008, marking the highest number of awards for one engagement since Vietnam. More recently, the group has faced significant challenges, including a 2017 ambush in Tongo Tongo, Niger, involving forces from the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara.

The group's identity is also reflected in its beret flash, which uses four colors—yellow, red, black, and white—to represent the pre-existing Special Forces units from which its original members were drawn.
