A 537-vote margin decided the fate of the American presidency
In short: In the weeks following the 2000 U.S. election, Florida became the center of a legal and political storm. As recounts stalled and Supreme Court rulings intervened, the margin between George W. Bush and Al Gore narrowed to a razor-thin margin that would change the course of history.
The 2000 presidential election in Florida was defined by extreme closeness and procedural chaos. On election night, November 7, 2000, networks initially called the state for Al Gore before reversing their decision as results trickled in. While George W. Bush held an initial lead of 1,784 votes, Florida law mandated a statewide machine recount because the margin was less than 0.5 percent.
The recount process was fraught with irregularities and legal battles. A machine recount completed on November 10 reduced Bush's lead to 327 votes, though analysts suggest 18 counties—a quarter of all votes—did not participate in the mandated recount. The Gore campaign subsequently sought manual recounts in four counties: Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Volusia. This sparked intense litigation, with the Bush campaign arguing that selective recounts violated the 14th Amendment.
The controversy extended to voter eligibility and ballot design. In Palm Beach County, the 'butterfly ballot' caused confusion, while in other areas, tens of thousands of citizens were wrongly removed from voting rolls because they were identified as felons on lists with error rates of 15 percent or higher. Many of these wrongly excluded voters were Black, a demographic that statistically favored the Democratic nominee.
The conflict reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which ultimately intervened. In the landmark case Bush v. Gore, the Court halted the manual recounts on December 12, citing a lack of uniform statewide methodology and insufficient time. This decision effectively secured the presidency for George W. Bush secured the state, winning by 537 votes from a total of 5,963,110 cast.
