How a handpicked successor triggered a Republican schism
In short: In 1908, William Howard Taft won the presidency with ease, backed by the legendary Theodore Roosevelt. Yet, this victory contained the seeds of a political explosion that would shatter his party, split a friendship, and ultimately hand the White House to the Democrats.
The 1908 election was a transition of power within the Republican Party. Theodore Roosevelt, honoring his pledge not to seek a third term, threw his support behind his close friend and Secretary of War, William Howard Taft. Taft, a former judge and the first civilian governor of the Philippines, secured the Republican nomination on the first ballot at the Chicago convention, defeating several contenders including Philander C. Knox and Joseph B. Foraker. On the Democratic side, William Jennings Bryan secured his third nomination in Denver, overcoming challenges from Minnesota Governor John Albert Johnson.
Taft secured 321 electoral votes against Bryan's 162, yet his term suffered from increasing tension with his party's Progressive faction. Although Taft was a vigorous trustbuster, he alienated reformers by backing the protectionist Payne-Aldrich Tariff of 1909 and firing the conservationist Gifford Pinchot. These actions, combined with his more conservative political alignment, created a deep rift between Taft and the progressives who had expected him to carry on Roosevelt's reform agenda.
The tension reached a breaking point in 1912. When Roosevelt returned from an African safari, progressives urged him to oppose Taft. The resulting bitter primary battle and the subsequent formation of the Bull Moose Party by Roosevelt's supporters effectively split the Republican vote. This fragmentation ensured the election of Democrat Woodrow Wilson and led to Taft's historic 1912 defeat, where he won just two states—Utah and Vermont—and set a record for the poorest electoral performance by an incumbent seeking reelection, capturing only 8 electoral votes.
