A ground agent with no pilot's license performed incredible aerial maneuvers
In short: On August 10, 2018, Richard Russell, a Horizon Air ground service agent, stole a Bombardier Q400 from Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. Despite having no formal piloting experience, he executed a barrel roll over Puget Sound before crashing the aircraft on Ketron Island.
The incident began at 19:32 local time when Russell, a 28-year-old ground agent, conducted an unauthorized takeoff from Plane Cargo 1 at Sea–Tac. The aircraft, a 2012 De Havilland Dash 8-400, was not scheduled for flight that day. During the flight, Russell maintained radio contact with air traffic control, describing himself as a "broken guy" and expressing a desire to see an orca. He also used the flight to voice complaints about minimum wage.
The aerial display was unexpectedly sophisticated. Despite lacking a pilot's license, Russell performed a barrel roll over Puget Sound, recovering just ten feet above the water. A veteran pilot noted the maneuver was well-executed, without stalling or damaging the wings. Horizon Air CEO Gary Beck described the maneuvers as "incredible," noting the mystery of how Russell achieved such skill. Some colleagues suggested he may have trained using flight simulation software, while another pilot recalled seeing him practicing cockpit procedures in a parked aircraft in 2017.
The response was swift and military-grade. Two McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagles from the Oregon Air National Guard's 142nd Fighter Wing were scrambled from Portland Air National Guard Base at 20:15 local time to intercept the plane. The fighters, armed with AIM-9 Sidewinder and AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, reached supersonic speeds, creating sonic booms. Ultimately, the aircraft crashed at 20:43 local time on Ketron Island. The FBI later ruled out terrorism, concluding Russell acted alone in a suicide attempt.
The aftermath saw the aircraft, valued at $30 million, insured by Alaska Airlines. While the crash caused no collateral human injuries, the debris cleanup on the sparsely populated Ketron Island continued well into 2019. In the digital age, the event became a cultural phenomenon, with social media users dubbing Russell "Sky King."
