From grassy runways to strategic battlegrounds: the evolution of Zagreb's skies
In short: Before it became a modern transit hub, Zagreb's aviation history was defined by makeshift airfields and wartime chaos. From the first flight in 1910 to being a target of rocket attacks in 1995, the city's airports have mirrored the turbulent political shifts of the Balkan region.
The lineage of Zagreb's aviation began in 1909 at Črnomerec, a site established when the city was part of Austria-Hungary. Early pioneers like Eduard Slavoljub Penkala were instrumental; his mechanic, Dragutin Novak, became the first Croatian pilot on June 23, 1910. However, early experimentation was fragile; a crash on October 20, 1910, caused Penkala to abandon further research.
As aviation matured, Borongaj Airport emerged in 1926, becoming a significant hub that connected Zagreb to cities like Belgrade, Vienna, and Milan. During the Second World War, the site's role shifted from civil to military, serving as a Nazi air base and hosting the only female Luftwaffe pilot, Hanna Reitsch. The facility suffered severe damage from Allied bombing during the conflict.
The modern era began with the move to Pleso in 1962 to accommodate growing commercial needs. During the Yugoslav era, it became the second-busiest airport in the country, hosting JAT's nonstop flights to New York City. However, the transition to independence brought new tensions. During the Croatian War of Independence, the airport was a site of military incidents, including the interception of a Boeing 707 carrying arms in 1991 and rocket attacks in May 1995.
Today, the Franjo Tuđman Airport serves as a vital international gateway and the hub for Croatia Airlines. Following a 30-year concession granted in 2012, a massive 70,000 m2 terminal was inaugurated in March 2017 to replace aging infrastructure, marking a shift from the era of grass runways to a high-capacity, modern logistics center.
