A major 2026 conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan has triggered widespread cross-border military engagement.
Following a surge in militant attacks within Pakistan, the nation launched a large-scale military campaign against targets inside Afghanistan. This escalation, involving airstrikes, artillery, and ground combat, marks a volatile new chapter in the long-standing tensions between the two neighbors, resulting in significant casualties and humanitarian displacement.
The 2026 conflict erupted in late February after Pakistan conducted airstrikes targeting militant camps in eastern Afghanistan. Pakistani officials stated these operations were a retaliatory measure against groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the Islamic State – Khorasan Province, which they blamed for a series of deadly bombings in Islamabad and other frontier provinces. The Afghan Taliban, who returned to power in 2021, denied these accusations, labeling the strikes a violation of their territorial integrity.
The situation rapidly intensified into a broader confrontation. By 26 February, the Taliban launched a retaliatory operation, leading Pakistan to declare an open war and initiate Operation Ghazab lil Haq. Both sides reported conflicting casualty figures and military outcomes. While Pakistan claimed to have destroyed numerous Taliban border posts and military headquarters, the Taliban asserted they had captured Pakistani outposts and inflicted heavy losses on Pakistani forces. Independent satellite imagery later confirmed damage to several military-related sites, including ammunition depots in Kabul and Kandahar.
This war is deeply rooted in historical disputes over the Durand Line, the international border established at the time of Pakistan's independence in 1947. Tensions had been building throughout 2025, marked by failed ceasefire attempts in Doha and Istanbul. The 2026 outbreak has caused significant humanitarian distress, with thousands of civilians displaced and reports of media restrictions and forced mobilization within Afghanistan. As the conflict continued into March, both nations remained locked in a cycle of airstrikes and border skirmishes, with the international community, including the UN, expressing concern over the civilian toll and the potential for further regional instability.
