A leadership vacuum looms before the 2026 Republika Srpska elections
In short: In a rare political maneuver, the incumbent president of Republika Srpska has declined to seek re-election. As voters prepare for the October 2026 general elections, the region faces a pivotal moment of transition where the established order meets an uncertain new leadership.
The upcoming general elections in Republika Srpska are scheduled for October 4, 2026. These polls serve as a critical component of the broader Bosnian general elections, where citizens will cast ballots to determine two primary outcomes: the selection of the President of Republika Srpska and the composition of the National Assembly, which consists of 83 members.
A significant shift in the political landscape is marked by the decision of incumbent president Siniša Karan. Despite being eligible for another full term, Karan chose not to run for re-election. This creates a unique opening for new leadership within the SNSD (Alliance for a Better Future) and other competing parties, as the official list of candidates for the presidency and two vice-presidency positions was only finalized in August 2026.
Early data suggests a fragmented political environment. A Geostrategy poll conducted in late summer 2026 among 850 respondents indicates that the SNSD remains the largest party with approximately 28.3% of the vote. However, they face significant competition from the PSS at 23.7% and the SDS at 18.5%. The remaining political space is divided among several smaller parties, including Za pravdu i red, SP-Demos, and various others, while Bosniak parties collectively hold a 5.0% share of the sentiment.
The election represents more than just a change in personnel; it is a test of regional stability. With limited opinion polling available prior to the vote, the results will determine how the remaining seats in the National Assembly are distributed and who will steer the entity's governance during a period of transition.
