From lava divers to desert guardians: the versatile 24th MEU
In short: The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit is a Swiss Army knife of military power. With about 2,200 personnel, this rapid-response force can pivot from high-intensity combat and maritime special operations to humanitarian disaster relief or even diverting volcanic lava flows in a matter of days.
The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is structured as a Marine Air Ground Task Force, designed for independent, rapid deployment from the sea. It integrates four distinct elements: a Command Element, a Ground Combat Element based on an infantry battalion, an Aviation Combat Element featuring tiltrotor squadrons, and a Logistics Command Element. This modularity allows them to operate under strict communications restrictions or in adverse weather conditions, fulfilling missions ranging from conventional amphibious assaults to maritime special operations.
The unit's history is defined by extreme versatility. In 1982, it served as part of the multinational peacekeeping force in Lebanon, where it suffered a devastating loss of 241 servicemen during the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing. However, its role often shifts toward humanitarian and civil support. In 1992, for instance, the MEU deployed helicopters to assist Italian authorities in diverting lava flows from Mount Etna to protect the town of Zafferana Etnea. Other notable actions include delivering food and medicine to Kurds in Turkey and northern Iraq in 1991 and providing aid to Somalis in 1994.
More recently, the unit has demonstrated its ability to scale for complex geopolitical crises. In 2008, it conducted a major operation in Helmand province, Afghanistan, pushing out Taliban forces from Garmser. By 2010, the mission shifted toward 'winning hearts and minds' through coordination with local leaders. The MEU also serves as an expeditionary crisis response force; during its 2012 deployment, it participated in Exercise Eager Lion 12—a massive multinational event involving over 11,000 personnel from 19 countries—to strengthen military-to-military relationships across the Middle East and Africa.
Today, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, the 24th MEU remains a cornerstone of forward-deployed power. It balances heavy combat capabilities, such as its AV-8B Harriers used in NATO air campaigns against Yugoslavia, with specialized skills like CBRN defense and unmanned aerial systems (RQ-11B Raven) for intelligence workshops.
