The 60-Day Autonomy of a Marine Expeditionary Force
In short: Imagine a military force capable of projecting massive offensive power ashore while remaining entirely self-sufficient. The II Marine Expeditionary Force is designed to sustain itself in active combat for two full months without any external assistance, a feat of logistical engineering that defines modern amphibious warfare.
The II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF) functions as a Marine Air-Ground Task Force, a sophisticated integration of ground, air, and logistics components. Its primary objective is to project offensive power while maintaining a self-sustaining operational tempo. This independence is a core requirement for its role in providing fighting formations to several major commands, including U.S. European Command, Central Command, and Southern Command. While the II MEF is a service-retained force—meaning it is not permanently assigned to a specific geographic command—it remains a versatile global asset.
Units are often supplied for various activities throughout the United States. U.S. Africa Command plus the U.S. NATO commands and regions under Southern Command oversight. This flexibility allows the force to respond to contingency requirements worldwide rather than being tethered to a single theater. The force's versatility is further demonstrated through its ability to modularize.
It can deploy as a full MEF, or break down into smaller, task-organized units. For instance, a Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) is roughly one-third the size of a MEF, and a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is about one-third the size of an MEB. These smaller units can be tailored to specific missions, such as utilizing Maritime Prepositioning Ships (MPS). The MPS program allows a brigade's worth of equipment to be forward-deployed on four or five ships, enabling an MEB to link up with supplies and be sustained for 30 days. For the 6th Fleet Commander, the 22d, 24th, and 26th MEUs act as the landing force at the tiniest level. These units, consisting of approximately 2,200 Marines and Sailors, provide rapid response capabilities and can act as the forward element of a larger task force if a situation escalates.
