The maritime elite: tracing the lineage of American naval special warfare
In short: Before they were Navy SEALs, these operators were pioneers of underwater demolition and unconventional naval tactics. From clearing beaches in World War II to modern covert intelligence gathering, Naval Special Warfare has evolved into a globally-dispersed force capable of striking anywhere on earth before an enemy can act.
The United States Naval Special Warfare Command (NSW) was officially established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy to provide the Navy with a nimble, elite maritime force for unconventional warfare. However, its roots stretch back much further to World War II. During that era, the U.S. Navy recognized that successful amphibious landings required specialized personnel to reconnoiter beaches, identify defenses, and guide landing forces. This necessity birthed units like the Scouts and Raiders, Naval Combat Demolition Units (NCDUs), and Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs).
The evolution of these units was marked by several key milestones. During the Vietnam era, separate UDTs and SEAL teams operated independently until 1983, when the UDTs were merged into the SEAL teams to streamline operations. In 1987, the command was formally organized at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado as a maritime component of United States Special Operations Command. Today, the NSW community consists of approximately 9,200 personnel, including over 2,700 active-duty operators and 4,000 support staff who provide real-time intelligence to decision-makers.
Modern NSW operations are defined by versatility and rapid deployment. Forces can be inserted via parachute, submarine, helicopter, or high-speed boat to conduct missions ranging from capturing high-value targets to underwater demolition of man-made obstacles. These units operate in tightly knit structures—from 2-person swim buddies to 32-person task units—and are trained to function in extreme environments including arctic conditions, deserts, and dense jungles. Their primary goal remains providing immediate military options amidst rapidly changing global crises.
