How the 7th Special Forces Group evolved from commando raids to global advisory missions
In short: Tracing its roots to a legendary World War II commando unit, the 7th Special Forces Group has transformed from a Cold War unconventional warfare force into a primary instrument of American foreign policy. Today, it balances direct combat operations with deep-rooted advisory roles across the Americas, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
The 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) traces its lineage to the 1st Special Service Force, a combined Canadian-American unit established in 1942. Known as the Devil's Brigade, this unit fought in Italy and southern France before disbanding in 1944. The modern 7th Group was formally activated on 20 May 1960, evolving from the 77th Special Forces Group, which had been established at Fort Bragg in 1953. The 77th Group was instrumental in developing unconventional warfare doctrine, notably during the 1955 Operation Sagebrush exercise in Louisiana.
Throughout the Cold War, the 7th Group expanded its reach into Southeast Asia and Latin America. In Vietnam, it operated in Laos and trained local forces, with Captain Roger Donlon becoming the first Special Forces soldier to earn the Medal of Honor. By the 1980s, the unit shifted focus to Latin America, playing a critical advisory role in El Salvador, where it helped transform the local military into a counter-insurgency force. It also conducted counter-narcotics operations across the Andean Ridge and played a pivotal role in the 1989 Operation Just Cause in Panama, where operators disabled pro-Noriega propaganda broadcasts.
The 7th Group's mission set is broad, encompassing nine doctrinal tasks ranging from counter-terrorism to security force assistance. Since 2002, the unit has maintained a near-constant deployment cycle in Afghanistan, while also serving in Iraq. In 2011, the group completed a major transition, relocating its headquarters from Fort Bragg to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Despite these shifts, the unit remains defined by its ability to live and work alongside local populations, whether restoring utilities in post-conflict Panama or training partner forces to resist insurgencies.
