The man who defied orders to create a legendary 'spirit' of defiance
In short: In 1939, a Finnish lieutenant received a direct order to retreat. He chose to ignore it, standing his ground against the Soviet Union. This act of defiance didn't just hold a strategic front; it forged a national myth of resilience, fueled by unconventional warfare skills learned in the deserts of Morocco.
Aarne Juutilainen’s path to becoming a Finnish national hero was unconventional. Before the Winter War, he served five years in the French Foreign Legion (1930–1935), fighting Berber rebels in the Atlas Mountains. It was here he earned the nickname "The Terror of Morocco" and mastered guerrilla warfare tactics. These skills became his primary contribution to the Finnish defense; he used them to train his "Moroccan company," a unit of decorated marksmen and skiers that achieved "startling victories" against Soviet forces. Juutilainen is most famous for his role in the Battle of Kollaa. When Major General Woldemar Hägglund questioned if the position would hold, Juutilainen famously replied that it would hold "unless the orders are to run." In a literal display of defiance, he had actually received a regimental order to withdraw a week prior but chose to disregard it.
This refusal to retreat was credited by his superiors with creating the "Kollaa spirit," a defining moment of Finnish resistance during the Winter War. However, the historical record reveals a complex, darker duality to his character. While he was respected as a fair and protective leader on the front lines, he was also described as a "nervous and ferocious" man who struggled with severe alcoholism. By 1944, his conduct led to a transfer to a prisoner-of-war company following an incident involving the beating of a subordinate. Post-war, he struggled with his addiction and lived a life far removed from the romanticized image of the hero he became in the public imagination.
