In short: In 2009, a British sniper recorded a legendary 2,475-meter kill. At the heart of this feat was the Accuracy International AWM, a rifle engineered to handle the immense pressures of magnum cartridges and push the boundaries of ballistic physics.

The Accuracy International AWM, or Arctic Warfare Magnum, is a specialized bolt-action rifle designed for high-pressure magnum cartridges. While it is a variant of the original Arctic Warfare (AW) system, the AWM features a longer bolt to accommodate larger rounds like the .300 Winchester Magnum and the .338 Lapua Magnum. To manage the increased operating pressures, engineers revised the bolt head, locking ring, and extractor, and updated the magazines to handle the larger cartridges.

Precision at extreme distances relies on complex ballistics. The .300 Winchester Magnum variant utilizes a 660 mm stainless steel, fluted barrel with a specific 279.4 mm right-hand twist rate to enhance muzzle velocity and wind resistance. For the .338 Lapua Magnum, the rifle uses a 686 mm barrel. While the rifle is optimized for 16.2 g bullets, using heavier 19.44 g projectiles requires a different 254 mm twist rate to maintain stability in high-density air, such as on arctic coasts.

The AWM's evolution has been driven by the need for even greater capability. The AWM's capacity is restricted, as it fails to hold .338 Lapua Magnum rounds meeting C.I.P. standards. maximum overall length of 93.50 mm due to magazine constraints. This led to the development of the AX series, including the AX338, which features a longer, wider bolt action and an enlarged magazine. This newer system allows for the unimpeded use of maximum-length ammunition and provides a more flexible chassis for modern accessories like laser designators.

The rifle's global footprint is significant. The British Army's L115A1 variant has seen service in Afghanistan and Iraq, while the German Bundeswehr uses the AWM-F (designated G22) chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum. Other specialized units, from the Dutch Korps Commandotroepen to the Russian Alpha Group and the Republic of Korea Army, have utilized the AWM's precision for long-range operations.
