In short: It is technically not a missile, yet it strikes with surgical precision from hundreds of kilometers away. By combining high-lift wings with sophisticated GPS guidance, this glide bomb allows aircraft to destroy fortified targets while remaining safely outside the reach of enemy air defenses.

The AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) is a 450 kg (1,000 lb) glide bomb designed for 'Standoff from Point Defense' missions. Unlike traditional missiles that rely on engines, the JSOW is an unpowered weapon. It utilizes two wings that deploy after launch to provide lift, allowing it to travel up to 110 km (60 nmi) from high altitudes or 28 km (15 nmi) from low altitudes. This capability enables aircraft to engage soft targets—such as trucks, parked aircraft, and surface-to-air missile sites—while minimizing friendly losses by staying beyond the range of standard anti-aircraft defenses.

The weapon's development was a landmark in defense management. Originally developed by Texas Instruments (later sold to Raytheon), it was hailed as one of the most successful DOD programs of the 1990s. It achieved operational service a year ahead of schedule and avoided typical weight management issues. The program is often cited in academic research for its 'Integrated Product Teams' approach, where government and contractor staff worked in unified cells to streamline production and safety approvals.

The JSOW family includes several distinct variants tailored for different needs. The AGM-154A uses 145 BLU-97/B submunitions featuring shaped charges and incendiary rings. The now-cancelled AGM-154B was designed to carry sensor-fuzed weapons that could detect and penetrate vehicle armor. Meanwhile, the AGM-154C (JSOW BROACH) features an Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker for autonomous terminal guidance against hardened targets. While the US Air Force terminated production in 2005, the weapon remains a staple for the Navy and has been exported to allies like Poland, Turkey, and Finland.
