How a 19th-century piano cycle mapped the geography of the human soul
In short: Franz Liszt didn't just write music; he transcribed the internal landscape of the Romantic era. His masterpiece, Années de pèlerinage, transforms physical travel into a spiritual pilgrimage, weaving together the literature of Goethe and Byron with the personal triumphs and tragedies of his own life.
Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage) is a trilogy of piano suites that serves as the definitive summation of Franz Liszt's musical style. While the first two volumes, 'Suisse' and 'Italie', reflect the virtuosity of his youth, the third volume showcases his late-period shift toward harmonic experimentation and reduced technical display. The work is deeply rooted in the Romantic literary tradition, specifically Goethe's novel Wilhelm Meister's Journeyman Years, which provided the title's inspiration.
Liszt used the suites to explore specific emotional and physical locales. In 'Suisse', he revises earlier works like Album d'un voyageur to depict the Swiss struggle for liberation and the 'melancholy harmony' of Lake Wallenstadt—a place where Liszt's mistress, Marie d'Agoult, claimed he wrote music so moving it caused her to weep. In 'Italie', he draws from the sonnets of Petrarch and the paintings of Raphael, while the 'Venezia e Napoli' supplement captures the atmosphere of the Italian coast.
The third volume, published in 1883, represents a more introspective, somber era. It includes pieces dedicated to his granddaughter and a funeral march for Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. Notably, 'Les jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este' is cited as a precursor to musical Impressionism due to its shimmering textures and advanced harmonies. By prefacing pieces with poetry from Schiller, Byron, and Senancour, Liszt ensured that the listener's journey was as much a literary and spiritual odyssey as a musical one.
