From counter-insurgency pioneer to architect of external defense
In short: Antonio Nafarrete’s career mirrors the evolution of Philippine security. He rose through the ranks by dismantling domestic insurgencies and protecting heads of state, only to pivot toward a new era: preparing the nation for high-tech external threats and territorial defense in an increasingly volatile region.
Nafarrete's military foundation was forged during a period of intense domestic instability. He entered the Philippine Military Academy in 1986, amidst coup attempts against Corazon Aquino. A student who excelled in military history and leadership, he graduated in 1990 as part of the "Bigkis-Lahi" Class. During his early career, he focused on internal security by helping establish the 1st Scout Ranger Company in 1991 and spent numerous years fighting Abu Sayyaf terrorists and New People’s Army (NPA) groups throughout the Visayas and Mindanao.
His trajectory moved from frontline combat to elite protection and strategic oversight. Between 2011 and 2015, he served under the Presidential Security Group, monitoring operations for former President Benigno Aquino III and visiting foreign dignitaries. This experience provided a bridge between tactical execution and high-level governance. By the time he became Commanding General of the Philippine Army in July 2025, his focus shifted toward institutional modernization—emphasizing human capital, mental well-being, and the procurement of modern hardware.
As of July 21, 2026, Nafarrete is leading a major doctrinal transformation while acting as the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff. He has declared the AFP is entering a "critical phase," moving from internal defense to external defense operations. This includes implementing the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC), integrating drone warfare inspired by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and upgrading artillery units to enhance long-range capabilities against external threats.
