In short: During the 19th century, an industrial revolution in northern Spain sparked a massive wave of migration. While many Asturians sought fortune in the Americas, those who succeeded returned as wealthy entrepreneurs known as Indianos. Their influence remains visible today in both Spanish architecture and global cultural institutions.

Following 1830, Asturias underwent a major shift sparked by finding and industrialising local iron plus coal deposits. This industrial shift coincided with a period of intense migration to the Americas, including destinations like Mexico, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. While many moved for labor, a specific class of successful emigrants emerged: the 'Indianos'. These individuals made their fortunes in the West Indies and beyond before returning to their native land.

The impact of these wealthy returnees is still physically present in Asturias today. They funded the construction of numerous large 'modernista' villas and established vital cultural institutions, including public libraries and free schools. This era of migration also laid the groundwork for a vast global diaspora; by 2019, it was reported that over 133,854 Asturians lived in 65 different countries.

The Asturian presence is particularly deep-rooted in Latin America, specifically Argentina and Uruguay. Beyond individual wealth, these communities established enduring social structures, including financial banks, sporting teams, and amateur vocal groups. This cultural persistence is mirrored in the United States, where tens of thousands moved to work in Florida's agriculture, California's fields, and West Virginia's zinc smelters during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Despite these global movements, a defining characteristic of the Asturian people remains their intense attachment to their land of birth. This paradox of being a global diaspora with local roots is reflected in the existence of 82 Asturian Centers across the United States, maintaining a connection to the northern coast of the Iberian Peninsula.
