The woman who invented the secret identity of the superhero
In short: Before Batman or Spider-Man, there was Sir Percy Blakeney. A wealthy English fop by day and a daring escape artist by night, he saved French aristocrats from the guillotine. This fictional hero established the blueprint for the modern secret identity, blending high-society glamour with clandestine heroism.
Baroness Orczy, a Hungarian-born British novelist, created The Scarlet Pimpernel in 1903. While she conceived the character while standing on a London Underground platform, it was her collaboration with her husband, Montague Barstow, that brought it to life. They first submitted the story as a play; despite initial small audiences, it became a massive hit in London's West End, running for four years and exceeding 2,000 performances. This theatrical success propelled the novel into a commercial juggernaut.
Orczy’s creation introduced several tropes that would later define the superhero genre: the use of a signature weapon (a sword), a penchant for elaborate disguise, a calling card left at the scene of an intervention, and a secret network of supporters known as The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel. By establishing a public persona as a slow-thinking playboy, Blakeney could operate with impunity, outwitting adversaries who underestimated his intellect.
Beyond fiction, Orczy was a woman of intense conviction. During the Great War, she created the Women of England's Active Service League as a devoted advocate for British militarism and imperialism. Her goal was to mobilize 20,000 women to persuade men to enlist, and she was a founding member of the White Feather Movement—a ritual where women publicly shamed non-enlisting men with white feathers to symbolize cowardice. Her life was marked by both artistic success and personal transition, moving from Hungary to London in 1880 and eventually retiring to a villa in Monte Carlo during World War II.
