When a city becomes a siege of political legitimacy
In short: In January 2018, the southern Yemeni city of Aden became a violent laboratory for secessionist ambition. What began as a protest against government corruption rapidly escalated into heavy artillery duels and tank battles, pitting a regional separatist movement against the established national government in a fight for control over Yemen's south.
The conflict centered on the Southern Transitional Council (STC), formed in May 2017 by Aydarus al-Zubaydi. The STC sought independence for South Yemen, a region that had been an independent state until its incorporation into the Yemen Arab Republic in 1990. Tensions peaked when the STC issued an ultimatum on January 21, 2018, demanding that President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi sack his entire cabinet—specifically targeting Prime Minister Ahmed Obeid bin Daghr for corruption—or face a coup.
Violence erupted on January 28, 2018, as security forces loyal to the Hadi government attempted to block pro-STC demonstrators. The fighting quickly moved beyond street protests into heavy urban warfare across districts like Khormaksar and Crater. The STC deployed reinforcements from Dhale and Shabwah provinces, utilizing tanks and heavy artillery. By the time the STC proclaimed victory on January 30, they had seized most of the city, including government offices and the last pro-Hadi strongholds in Dar Sad.
The aftermath left the Hadi government's members effectively under house arrest within the Presidential Palace. While the STC did not enter the palace itself, the Prime Minister was forced to prepare for a flight to Saudi Arabia. The conflict highlighted deep internal fractures: while the STC framed its actions as a liberation from corruption and a move toward self-determination, President Hadi characterized the events as an ongoing coup against national unity. This struggle remains a pivotal chapter in the broader Yemeni Civil War and the enduring quest for southern autonomy.
