In short: Before the Vicksburg campaign became a legendary victory, it was a series of costly, chaotic failures. Major General Ulysses S. Grant attempted to bypass Confederate defenses using canals and bayous, only to face flooded trenches, destroyed gunboats, and the unforgiving Mississippi Delta.

In the winter of 1862–1863, the struggle for Vicksburg, Mississippi, was defined by strategic desperation. Known as the 'Gibraltar of the Confederacy,' the city sat atop high bluffs overlooking a horseshoe bend in the river, making it nearly impossible for Union ships to approach. Confederate President Jefferson Davis famously called the city the 'nail head' holding the South together, as it protected vital supply lines from Texas and Arkansas.

Major General Ulysses S. and his subordinates initially attempted to use the region's complex waterways to outflank the city. These 'bayou operations' were fraught with difficulty. One attempt to expand the Williams Canal into 'Grant's Canal' failed when a sudden rise in the river flooded the works, rendering the project useless. Another, the Yazoo Pass Expedition, saw Union gunboats thwarted by felled trees and the construction of Fort Pemberton by Confederate forces.

Even the attempt to use Lake Providence to connect to the Red River was met with skepticism by historians, with some labeling it a 'boondoggle.' Despite these failed 'experiments,' Grant eventually pivoted to a daring maneuver. On April 29 and 30, 1863, Union forces successfully ran the Confederate batteries and landed at Bruinsburg, Mississippi. This bold move led to the capture of Jackson and the eventual siege of Vicksburg.

The campaign concluded on July 4, 1863, when Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton surrendered. This victory, occurring just one day after the Confederate defeat at Gettysburg, effectively severed the Confederacy's western supply lines and reopened the Mississippi River for Northern commerce.
