Was the Bosnian Crusade a holy war or a strategic land grab by Hungary?
Between 1235 and 1241, a crusade sanctioned by the Pope targeted Bosnia, ostensibly to purge dualist heretics. Yet, historical evidence suggests this campaign was primarily a Hungarian war of conquest. When the Mongol invasion of Europe forced a sudden retreat, the crusade left behind a legacy of deep-seated anti-Hungarian resentment.
The Bosnian Crusade was ostensibly launched to address religious concerns, as Bosnia was viewed by both Catholic and Orthodox Europe as a hotbed of heresy. Rumors of a 'Cathar antipope' named Nicetas residing in the region fueled tensions, and Pope Honorius III first preached a crusade against the country in 1221. By 1233, Pope Gregory IX had deposed the local Catholic bishop for alleged incompetence and heresy, replacing him with a German Dominican, John of Wildeshausen. When Gregory issued a formal call for a crusade in 1234, Hungary seized the opportunity to assert its authority over an increasingly independent neighbor.
Led by the Hungarian prince Coloman, the military campaign began in 1235 but faced stiff resistance in the northern region of Soli. The crusaders struggled to penetrate the mountainous terrain, only reaching Bosnia proper by 1238. While Dominicans managed to build a cathedral in Vrhbosna and burned some heretics at the stake, they failed to conquer the central parts of the realm. Ban Matthew Ninoslav maintained his rule throughout the conflict, and the crusaders never achieved total control over the territory.
The crusade ended abruptly in 1241 when the Mongol invasion of Europe under Batu Khan forced the Hungarian army to withdraw. The crusaders were largely annihilated during the subsequent conflict, and Coloman was killed. Although future Popes, including Innocent IV, Benedict XII, and Urban V, called for further crusades, none materialized. The primary long-term consequence was not religious reform, but a profound mistrust of Hungary that persisted for centuries, eventually influencing the region's response to the Ottoman conquest in 1463.
