The trauma surgeon who refused to be a superhero
In short: Most mutants in the Marvel Universe dream of heroism, but Dr. Cecilia Reyes had different plans. A specialist in trauma surgery, she sought an ordinary life, using her psiplasmic bio-field for protection rather than combat. Her story is one of agency, identity, and the struggle to remain human.
Created by Scott Lobdell and Carlos Pacheco, Cecilia Reyes first appeared in X-Men (vol. 2) #65 in June 1997. Unlike many of her peers, Reyes did not seek out the X-Men; she was a medical doctor raised in the Bronx by a Puerto Rican family. Her decision to pursue medicine was born from a childhood tragedy in which she witnessed her father being shot and felt powerless to intervene.
Her mutant ability allows her to project a 'psiplasmic bio-<0xC2><0xA0>field' around her body. This field provides superhuman durability against physical and energy-based attacks, and she can even use it as a blunt force or create piercing spikes. Despite this power, Reyes often avoided superheroics, preferring her career as a trauma surgeon. She has been an honorary member of the X-Men following the events of 'Operation: Zero Tolerance' and has navigated intense conflicts, including the battle against the Neo and surviving the Neverland concentration camp.
Critics and scholars have noted the significance of her characterization. Writer Marjorie Liu, in the series NYX, is credited with providing a perspective where Reyes is defined by her choices rather than her biology. By focusing on her role as a medical professional, Liu offered a nuanced portrayal of a character who is both Latinx and mutant, moving beyond the 'tokenism' often found in marginalized characters. While she has appeared in various rankings—such as being named one of the best superhero doctors by CBR—her true impact lies in her commitment to service and her refusal to let her abilities define her entire existence.
