In short: In an alternate reality, the celebrated scientist Hank McCoy became a ruthless geneticist. Driven by a 'survival of the fittest' ideology, this version of Beast abandoned ethics to pursue terrifying experiments, eventually escaping his dying dimension to terrorize the main Marvel universe.

Dark Beast is the twisted counterpart of the X-Men's Beast, hailing from a dimension where Charles Xavier died, leaving McCoy without an ethical mentor. Working under Mister Sinister, this version of McCoy embraced the ideology of Apocalypse, using genetic engineering to breed more powerful mutants. His experiments were notoriously brutal; he viewed unworthy mutants as mere components for a 'genetic stew' used to create Apocalypse's army of Infinites. To enhance his own mutation, he experimented on himself, resulting in a bestial, ape-like appearance.

After escaping to the primary Earth-616 universe via the M'Kraan Crystal, Dark Beast's history is marked by infiltration and chaos. He once successfully impersonated the true Beast to infiltrate the X-Men, a ruse maintained by murdering his counterpart's childhood friends and teachers. His presence often coincided with larger cosmic threats, such as the Onslaught Saga, where he allied with the entity Onslaught. His scientific pursuits remained predatory, ranging from experimenting on Morlocks in Manhattan's subway tunnels to developing the 'Omega Machine' for Norman Osborn's Dark X-Men.

The character's physical state and morality have fluctuated wildly through various eras. At one point, the physical toll of self-experimentation left him requiring a life support suit, and he was eventually killed by Magik during the 'Secret Empire' storyline after releasing a lethal virus. However, his existence is far from over; Mister Sinister has been revealed to keep Dark Beast's head alive in a tube. Despite his villainy, he has occasionally formed uneasy alliances with his counterpart to face extinction-level threats, though their fundamental disagreement on the ethics of science always remains a breaking point.
