In short: In the Marvel Universe, Balder the Brave is more than just Thor's half-brother. As a nearly invulnerable prince of Asgard, his life is a cycle of resurrection and immense tragedy, from being killed by a mistletoe arrow to surviving the brutal slaughter of the pantheons by the Chaos King.

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in October 1962, Balder the Brave is a fictional character based on the Norse deity Baldr. As the son of Odin and Frigga, he holds the status of a prince of Asgard. While he is often seen as a companion to the Warriors Three, his role has shifted significantly across Marvel continuity, at times serving as the ruler of Asgard during Thor's absences.

Balder's near-invulnerability is a defining trait, granted by a spell from his mother to avert Ragnarök. This protection makes him nearly impossible to harm within the Asgardian dimension, with the notable exception of weapons made of mistletoe wood. This vulnerability was famously exploited when the blind god Hoder accidentally killed him with a mistletoe arrow, an event that nearly triggered Ragnarök.

His history is marked by profound trauma and immense combat feats. He once renounced killing after seeing the souls of those he had slain, only to be forced by Hela to kill tens of thousands of souls to escape Hel. Despite his agility and speed—which Thor claims can rival the speed of light—Balder has faced devastating losses, including the death of his love, Nanna, caused by the lust of Karnilla, the Queen of the Norns.

In the cosmic struggle against the Chaos King, Amatsu-Mikaboshi, Balder was one of the few deities to survive the initial, brutal slaughter of the pantheons. His resilience defines him as a warrior, even as he grapples with the guilt of his rule and the devastating consequences of the conflicts that shape the Nine Realms.
