From Vietnam combat to the top of the Marine Corps
In short: Before leading the entire Marine Corps, Charles C. Krulak commanded rifle companies in the jungles of Vietnam. His journey from an engineering student at the Naval Academy to the 31st Commandant is a masterclass in military progression and command.
Born in Quantico, Virginia, in 1942, Charles C. Krulak followed a path defined by rigorous academic and military training. After graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1960, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1964. His intellectual foundation was later bolstered by a Master of Science in Labor Relations from George Washington University in 1973. His academic journey also included specialized training at the Amphibious Warfare School in 1968, the Army Command and General Staff College in 1976, and the National War College in 1982.
Krulak's operational experience was forged in high-stakes environments. During two tours of duty in Vietnam, he held command positions over a platoon and two rifle companies. His subsequent career saw him leading diverse units, from the Counter-Guerilla Warfare School in Okinawa in 1970 to the 3d Battalion, 3d Marines between 1983 and 1985. He also played a significant role during the Gulf War, commanding the 2d Force Service Support Group. Beyond combat leadership, he served as the commanding officer for the Marine Barracks at North Island, California, from 1973 to 1976. He also directed the Special Training Branch and Recruit Series at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego between 1966 and 1968.
His ascent through the ranks was steady and marked by significant responsibility. After being promoted to brigadier general in 1989, he moved through the grades of major general in 1992 and lieutenant general later that same year. On June 29, 1995, he reached the rank of general, assuming his role as the 31st Commandant of the Marine Corps. He led the Corps until his retirement on June 30, 1999, when he was succeeded by General James L. Jones. Prior to his final promotion, he served as the commander of Marine Forces Pacific. His decorated service includes receiving the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star with a Combat V.
