In short: Though officially titled Charles XV, Sweden's nineteenth-century monarch was only the ninth king to bear the name. A ruler who championed constitutional reform and Scandinavian solidarity, he navigated a complex era of shifting political power while leaving a legacy that persists in royal houses across Europe today.

Born in 1826 as the first Swedish monarch raised in the Lutheran faith and speaking Swedish as his primary language, Charles XV ascended the throne in 1859. His reign is remembered for a commitment to the rule of law, summarized by his guiding principle that a nation is built through its legal framework. Under his leadership, Sweden implemented significant legislative updates, including new municipal, ecclesiastical, and criminal codes. He also supported the 1866 parliamentary reforms and granted legal majority status to unmarried women in 1858, a milestone first achieved by his sister, Princess Eugenie.

Despite his popularity, Charles faced significant challenges in foreign policy. A passionate advocate for Scandinavianism, he fostered close ties with Denmark. During the 1864 crisis, his informal promises of support to Denmark proved problematic, as his government could not fulfill them, forcing Sweden into a position of strict neutrality. His reign also saw a reduction in royal authority as the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag, gained influence. By the time of his death from abdominal tuberculosis in 1872, the political landscape had shifted, and he was succeeded by his brother, Oscar II.

The king's personal life was marked by a difficult marriage to Louise of the Netherlands, whom he neglected in favor of several mistresses. While his only legitimate daughter, Louise, married the King of Denmark, his lack of a surviving son meant the throne passed to his brother. Today, while no Swedish king descends from him, his lineage continues through the royal families of Denmark, Norway, Belgium, and Luxembourg. His historical numeral remains a curiosity; he adopted the fifteenth designation based on a fictitious early history of Sweden, despite being only the ninth king to hold the name.
