The 'Blue City' was forged in the fires of the Reconquista
In short: Chefchaouen’s iconic blue walls hide a history of militant defense and refugee survival. Founded as a fortress against Portuguese invaders, the city became a sanctuary for displaced Muslims and Jews fleeing the Christian conquest of Spain, blending Andalusian artistry with a warrior spirit.
Founded in 1471 by Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami, Chefchaouen began as a small Kasbah designed for one primary purpose: defense. Al-Alami, a seasoned warrior who had distinguished himself in battle against Christian forces in the Emirate of Granada, established the settlement to protect northern Morocco from Portuguese maritime and land invasions. This military foundation defined the city's early identity as a jihadist fortress.
The city’s unique cultural DNA was shaped by the tragedy of the Reconquista. As Spanish Christians conquered al-Andalus, waves of refugees—including Andalusi Muslims (Moriscos), Spanish Jews, and Portuguese Jews—fled to the rugged mountains of the Rif. These settlers brought with them the sophisticated Andalusi architectural style, characterized by curved brick archways and specific landscaping. Over several decades, these refugees merged their culture with the local Ghomaras people, transforming a military outpost into a prosperous city of poets, philosophers, and traditional music.
Modern history saw the city caught in further colonial conflicts. Spain seized control in 1920, before the territory joined Abd el-Krim's Republic of the Rif during 1924. During the Rif War in 1925, the city suffered a notable incident when a rogue squadron of American volunteer pilots from the Lafayette Escadrille bombarded its civilians. The city eventually transitioned from a site of war to a cultural landmark, gaining independence from Spanish rule in 1956.
