In short: Chris Metzen didn't set out to build digital universes. After a friend saw a dragon sketched on a napkin, he joined a small studio that would eventually define modern fantasy and science fiction through franchises like Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft.

Metzen's career at Blizzard Entertainment—formerly known as Chaos Studios—began with a misunderstanding. After being hired, he thought he was entering a graphic design studio instead of a video game developer. His early contributions were focused on animation and artwork for titles like Justice League Task Force and the 1994 release Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.

As his influence grew, Metzen transitioned from an artist to a world-builder. By 1995, with Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, he began designing complex fictional universes and mission scenarios. He became a central architect for Blizzard's most iconic properties, serving as the lead designer for StarCraft in 1998 and the creative director for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos in 2002.

Beyond writing and design, Metzen became a recognizable voice within these worlds, most famously providing the voice for the orc character Thrall. His creative reach extended into literature and comics, including the novel Of Blood and Honor (2001) and the Transformers: Autocracy series. After a period of retirement starting in September 2016, he returned to Blizzard in December 2022, eventually becoming the Executive Creative Director of Warcraft in September 2023.

His artistic sensibilities were shaped by a blend of comic book and fantasy influences. He has cited the pencilling styles of Walt Simonson and Jim Lee, alongside the fantasy painting aesthetics of Larry Elmore and Keith Parkinson, as key drivers for his visual storytelling.
