The cowboy who was literally recycled from a cancelled space game
In short: Cole Cassidy is the ultimate example of creative persistence. Originally conceived as a cyborg scavenger for a failed StarCraft project, his design survived years of development limbo before finding a new home in Overwatch. He isn't just a hero; he is a piece of gaming history.
The character we know today began life as 'Prospector Logann,' a cyborg cowboy concept designed by Chris Metzen for the original StarCraft. When that project was cancelled, Blizzard’s Overwatch team took notice of the design's unique blend of science fiction and gunslinger archetypes. They felt it possessed everything needed for a playable hero: a strong personality, a memorable visual style, and deep roots in pop culture themes. Concept artists Arnold Tsang and Peter Lee refined his look for a different StarCraft title before it also failed. The Overwatch team specifically loved the combination of science fiction and gunslinger archetypes. His signature revolver, Peacekeeper, was conceptualized by artist Ben Zhang. He features a cybernetic left arm designed to rapidly fan the gun's hammer.
The character's identity underwent significant real-world shifts. Originally named Jesse McCree—a name chosen from a list of first and last names after a developer who had signed over his rights—the name was retired in 2021. This followed a lawsuit against Activision Blizzard regarding workplace misconduct involving the original namesake. While some fans were confused by his physical revisions in Overwatch 2, developers clarified that despite his tan, he is intended to be white. The name change occurred after announcers began calling him "the cowboy" during eSports broadcasts. His design includes a red serape and a belt buckle spelling "BAMF". In Overwatch 2, he received additional armor plating and a full beard. A specific skin even changed his hair color to blonde.
Narratively, Cassidy is a man seeking redemption for a past spent as a trafficker with the Deadlock Gang. After being caught in an Overwatch sting operation, he chose to serve in Blackwatch, the organization's black ops division, to make amends. He eventually went underground as a gunslinger for hire before resurfacing to help reform Overwatch. Mechanically, his role was constantly refined; developers moved him from a tank-counter to an 'anti-flanker,' balancing his long-range precision with mobility abilities like the Combat Roll. He originally assumed the pseudonym Jesse McCree to hide from his history in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He eventually recruited Pharah, Baptiste, Zarya, and D.Va for his new team. His ultimate ability, Deadeye, allows him to line up shots on every enemy in sight. Outside of the main game, he also appears in a Chinese dating sim called Loverwatch.
