In short: In the DC Universe, Circe is more than a mere villain; she is a master of transmutation who turns men into beasts. While her mythology is rooted in ancient Greece, her comic history reveals a complex evolution from a vengeful princess to a wise-cracking, modern sorceress.

Circe's origins vary significantly across DC continuities. In one version, she was a Graecian princess who was granted immortality by the evil Oggar 3,000 years ago. When he refused to grant her eternal youth, she turned into a hideous crone and mastered sorcery to restore her beauty. In a different reimagining, she is the daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Perseis, a former princess of Colchis who became a devotee of the goddess Hecate.

The most potent source of Circe's power comes from a mystical bargain. The goddess Hecate, demoted by her husband Hades, agreed to render her soul to Circe. This pact allowed Circe to attain goddess-level power and immortality. This connection creates a central conflict with Wonder Woman: Circe fears that Diana, who shares a name with a moon goddess, will steal Hecate's soul, leading Circe to attempt to destroy the Amazonian hero to protect her stolen power.

Throughout her history, Circe has been a versatile foil. During the 1960s, she was a precarious ally to Superman, even expressing an unrequited romantic interest in him. In more modern iterations, particularly following the 1988 reboot, she was reimagined with a lavender-haired, wise-cracking personality. By 2016, her aesthetic shifted again to a contemporary 'lesbian chic' look, featuring fitted blazers and sharp shirts, while maintaining her signature ability to transform humans into 'bestiamorphs.'

Her role as a villain is defined by a lack of repentance. Unlike many of Wonder Woman's Golden Age foes, Circe does not seek redemption when her plots fail. Whether she is turning Nazis into swine during World War II or luring sailors to her island of Aeaea to match their personalities to animal forms, her primary motivation remains a mix of personal vanity, magical ambition, and a deep-seated disdain for humanity.
