The tavern-keeper's son who tried to resurrect the Roman Republic
In short: Born to a washerwoman and a tavern keeper, Cola di Rienzo rose from obscurity to seize power in 14th-century Rome. Armed with classical eloquence and a messianic vision, he staged a coup to strip the nobility of their privileges and restore the city to its ancient glory.
Cola di Rienzo's rise was fueled by a deep immersion in classical antiquity. After spending his youth in Anagni studying Latin writers, historians, and poets, he became obsessed with the power of ancient Rome. He viewed the 14th-century city as degraded and wretched, seeking to restore it to pristine greatness. This intellectual obsession manifested in his public life through 'messianic' speeches and allegorical imagery that captivated the masses, the gentry, and wealthy merchants alike.
In May 1347, Rienzo orchestrated a coup d'état on Pentecost Sunday. He assumed the title of 'tribune,' declaring himself a liberator of the Holy Roman Republic. He proposed a revolutionary agenda: aiming to diminish aristocratic advantages, ensure fairness for every social tier, and revive the city's physical and soulful health. However, his success was quickly tempered by his own 'extravagant claims' and the 'sumptuous ceremonial' he adopted, which alienated many of his supporters and aggravated the political climate.
His career was a volatile cycle of power and exile. After being forced to resign in 1348 and facing papal opposition, he spent years as a fugitive, even traveling to the court of Emperor Charles IV in Prague. He was eventually used by Pope Innocent VI as a tool to manage the lower classes against the nobility. His final return to Rome in 1354, led by an army of mercenaries, ended in tragedy; his arbitrary rule and use of violence turned the populace against him, leading to his death in a popular riot.
