The railway station built where the army was allowed to burn buildings
In short: Copenhagen Central Station sits on ground dictated by medieval military strategy. Its predecessor was forced to be made of wood because of a strict "no-build" zone designed to ensure that, in the event of war, the army could easily incinerate any structures outside the city's fortifications.
Situated near the Vesterport (Western Gate) city gate, the present station occupies the former royal pleasure garden known as Dronningens Enghave. When the first railway station opened in 1847, it was situated within a "demarcation line." This was a specific military zone outside the city's ramparts where brick buildings were prohibited. The logic was purely tactical: if an enemy breached the walls, the military needed to be able to burn down any structures in the firing range outside the fortifications without worrying about permanent masonry. Because of these restrictions, the first station had to be constructed of wood. It wasn't until the dismantling of Copenhagen's fortifications and the official abandonment of the demarcation line in 1856 that the city allowed for brick construction. This shift in military policy paved the way for the second station, which opened in 1864 and featured a design by Johan Daniel Herholdt in the Rundbogenstil style. The current station, opened in 1911, represents a third iteration of the site's transit history. It was designed by Heinrich Wenck and serves as a through station, a significant engineering upgrade from the previous terminal designs. While the modern hub handles over 100,000 travelers daily and connects to international destinations like Sweden and Germany, its very footprint remains a testament to the era when urban planning was dictated by the looming threat of siege warfare.
