In short: He is not just a conqueror, but a self-appointed judge of genetic worth. Born in ancient Egypt, the immortal mutant known as Apocalypse uses a brutal philosophy of 'survival of the fittest' to force humanity to evolve through conflict and destruction.

The character of Apocalypse, also known as En Sabah Nur, emerged in the mid-1980s Marvel comics. While his presence was hinted at by writer Bob Layton in early X-Factor issues, he was fully realized by writer Louise Simonson and artist Jackson Guice. Originally, the character was intended to be the Daredevil villain known as the Owl, but editor Bob Harras pushed for an 'A-level' antagonist with the scale of Magneto to raise the stakes for the X-Factor team.

His origins are rooted in ancient Egypt, where he was born as a mutant with grey skin and blue lips. Abandoned by his people, the infant was raised by Baal of the Sandstormers. His life changed when he encountered the time-traveling Rama-Tut, who later became known as Kang the Conqueror. After experiencing heartbreak and rage, En Sabah Nur embraced his powers and adopted the name Apocalypse. He utilizes advanced technology left behind by the Celestials, space gods, to manipulate human history and ensure that only the strong survive.

Apocalypse's agenda is far more complex than simple villainy; he views himself as the father of mutantkind. He believes that by instigating wars and testing the strength of various beings—including the X-Men, the Avengers, and even historical figures like Dracula—he is driving the evolutionary process forward. This 'survival of the fittest' mentality has led him to create the Four Horsemen, a group of powerful subordinates, and has even seen him rule a conquered Earth as far in the future as the 39th century.
