In short: From the ancient Aksumite Empire to modern border wars, the relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea has swung between deep integration and total diplomatic severance. Today, as geopolitical tensions rise over Red Sea access, the two neighbors find themselves once again on the brink of renewed conflict.

The historical connection between these territories is profound, dating back to the Aksumite Kingdom, which spanned parts of both modern nations from the 1st century AD. Over centuries, the region saw shifting influences, including Ottoman control of the port of Massawa and Italian colonial expansion in the late 19th century. While the 1889 Treaty of Wuchale recognized Italian rule over territories north of the Mereb River, the 1896 Battle of Adwa saw Ethiopian forces decisively defeat Italian troops, leading to Italy's formal recognition of Abyssinian independence.

The 20th century brought more complex political structures. Following a 1950 UN vote, Eritrea was federated with Ethiopia as an autonomous province in 1952. However, this autonomy was dismantled by 1962, when the Eritrean Assembly voted to incorporate the territory into Ethiopia. This sparked a protracted war of independence, which ended in 1991 when the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) captured Asmara. Eritrea achieved formal sovereignty and UN recognition in 1993, initially fostering friendly ties with Ethiopia's transitional government.

Relations soured significantly during the 1998–2000 border war, a bloody conflict over the Badme region that killed an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 people. Despite the 2000 Algiers Agreement and a 2002 boundary commission ruling awarding Badme to Eritrea, Ethiopia's refusal to recognize the decision led to decades of hostility. A brief period of rapprochement began in 2018 under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, but this alliance fractured following the Tigray conflict, where Eritrean troops supported the Ethiopian army. By late 2026, the relationship had collapsed again, with Ethiopia expelling Eritrean diplomats and Eritrea severing all diplomatic ties.
