How a Scottish singer earned his stage name by spending too much time bathing
Born Derek William Dick, the former Marillion frontman adopted the moniker Fish after a landlady grew weary of his marathon sessions in the tub. From his rise in the 1980s progressive rock scene to his final studio album in 2020, his career has been defined by theatricality and relentless reinvention.
Born in Edinburgh in 1958, Derek William Dick rose to prominence as the lead singer and lyricist for the neo-progressive band Marillion. Between 1981 and 1988, he helped propel the group to significant commercial success, securing five Top 10 albums and a number-one hit with Misplaced Childhood. His vocal style, often compared to Roger Daltrey and Peter Gabriel, combined with his poetic lyrics, made him a standout figure in the rock landscape of the era. However, the pressures of constant touring and internal band conflicts led to his departure in 1988.
Following his exit from Marillion, Fish navigated a turbulent solo career marked by both creative exploration and financial instability. His debut solo album, Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors, reached number 5 in the UK charts in 1990, but subsequent projects were hampered by legal disputes with EMI Records and the bankruptcy of his UK promoter. To regain control, he established his own independent label, Dick Bros, in 1993, later transitioning to the Chocolate Frog Record Company. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he balanced music with occasional acting roles, appearing in dramas such as Jute City and the film Chasing the Deer.
In his later years, Fish embraced digital platforms to connect with his audience, notably through his weekly podcast, Fish on Friday. His final studio album, Weltschmerz, released in 2020, achieved critical and commercial success, selling over 60,000 copies. Despite the album's popularity, he chose to self-distribute it without a major label, which technically disqualified it from the Official Charts. After a career spanning over four decades, Fish officially retired from music following a farewell tour that concluded in March 2025, leaving behind a legacy of ornate lyrical concepts and a dedicated, enduring fanbase.
