How a keyboardist reshaped the sound of modern heavy metal
In short: Jordan Fish didn't just play for Bring Me the Horizon; he helped evolve them. By blending electronic elements into metalcore, he helped steer the band toward an experimental, genre-defying sound that defined a generation of heavy music.
Born in Reading, England, in 1986, Fish’s musical foundation was built on a mix of soul music and rock. While he initially explored electronic music in college and played in the band Worship, his career trajectory shifted significantly in 2012. During that year, he started collaborating with the rock group Bring Me the Horizon for their fourth studio record, Sempiternal. Initially invited by frontman Oli Sykes to add electronic textures, Fish's role quickly expanded into songwriting and production.
This collaboration proved transformative. By the time the band released That's the Spirit in 2015—their first fully self-produced album—Fish was handling production duties. This shift allowed the group the artistic freedom to move away from traditional metalcore toward a more experimental, electronic-driven direction. His influence was so profound that Alternative Press named him Keyboardist of the Year following his work on Sempiternal, and critics noted how his presence fundamentally altered the band's progression.
After parting ways with the band in December 2023, Fish transitioned into a high-demand independent producer and songwriter. His portfolio now includes collaborations with diverse artists such as Poppy, Halsey, Babymetal, and Architects. He is known for an immersive production style, often stating that he seeks to feel as emotionally invested in a project as the artist themselves. Whether working on heavy metal or saccharine pop, Fish remains a central figure in modern music production.
Beyond the studio, Fish has used his platform for philanthropy. In 2016, he and Oli Sykes raised over £50,000 for a pediatric intensive care unit at Southampton hospital, a cause close to Fish following his son Eliot's experience with a brain haemorrhage.
