In short: While the West called them corvettes, the Soviet Union viewed these vessels as something more specific: small anti-submarine ships. Designed for coastal dominance rather than open-ocean dominance, the Grisha class evolved through decades of rapid technological shifts, serving as a versatile backbone for maritime border security.

The Grisha class, known by the Soviet designation Project 1124 Al'batros, was developed between 1970 and 1990. These vessels were specifically engineered for coastal waters due to their limited range. Because they were designed for localized operations, the term 'corvette' was actually a conditional adaptation; the official Russian designation was Malyy protivolodochnyy korabl, or 'Small anti-submarine ship.' This distinction highlights their specialized role in hunting submarines near the shoreline rather than engaging in blue-water naval warfare.

The class underwent significant iterative evolution across five distinct variants. The Grisha I (1124.1) saw 12 ships built between 1970 and 1974. The Grisha II (1124P) was a specialized branch built for the KGB border guard, distinguished by the 'P' for pogranichnyi (border). These ships were unique because they replaced the standard SA-N-4 'Gecko' surface-to-air missile system with a second 57 mm gun mounting. Later variants, such as the Grisha III and Grisha V, saw further modifications including new electronics, 30 mm guns, and the replacement of twin 57 mm guns with a single 76 mm gun.

The legacy of the Grisha class is spread across several modern navies. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, ships were distributed to Ukraine and Lithuania. While many have been decommissioned, approximately 19 Grisha ships—primarily of the Grisha III type—remained active in the Russian Navy as of 2023. Today, these aging platforms are undergoing modernization to incorporate the 'Tornado 2' combat complex, which allows them to fire 'Zapad' type anti-submarine missiles, extending their relevance into the modern era.
