In short: Haketia is a linguistic mosaic, blending the Romance roots of medieval Spain with the distinct phonology of Moroccan Arabic. While it shares a lineage with Ladino, this Western Judaeo-Spanish variety carries a unique cultural fingerprint, preserving a centuries-old history of migration, adaptation, and religious identity.

Haketia, also known as Djudeo Spañol or Western Judaeo-Spanish, is primarily spoken by North African Sephardim. While it shares a common ancestor with Ladino Oriental—the variety spoken in the Balkans and Turkey—Haketia is distinguished by its heavy incorporation of Moroccan Arabic. Its very name is derived from the Arabic root ḥakā, meaning "tell," reflecting the profound influence of the region on its development.

Spanish forms the majority of the vocabulary, while Arabic contributes roughly 34.5% and Hebrew accounts for 18.5%. This synthesis is visible in its phonology, where pharyngeal fricatives and glottal stops from Arabic and Hebrew are preserved. For example, the word for "neighbor" (shaken) shifted in meaning to signify "Christian/Spanish," and the word for "Morocco" (Maˁarab) is derived directly from the Hebrew word for "west."

Unlike other varieties of Judaeo-Spanish, Haketia never developed a formal literary tradition because Spanish and French were used for education in Morocco. Consequently, it remained a colloquial tongue, making it more susceptible to the influence of modern Spanish. This transition accelerated during the Spanish occupation of Tetuan in 1860. Today, the language is critically endangered, with its speaker base shrinking from 30,000 in 1900 to approximately 1,000 today.

Despite its decline, Haketia is experiencing a slow renaissance through music, archives, and academic study. Scholars like José Benoliel and Alegría Bendelac have compiled dictionaries to preserve its grammar and lexicon. The language persists in small communities in Morocco, Spanish Africa, Israel, and even parts of the Amazon in Brazil.
