The enduring legacy of Morocco's ancient Jewish community
In short: From the Roman era to the modern streets of Casablanca, the story of Moroccan Jews is one of profound coexistence and transformation. Despite massive migrations to Israel and beyond, a vibrant cultural thread remains, woven into the very fabric of the Moroccan nation.
The Jewish presence in Morocco is ancient, with roots potentially predating 70 CE. Archaeological evidence, such as Hebrew epitaphs and menorah-decorated lamps found in the Roman city of Volubilis, confirms a long-standing community. This population was shaped by two distinct groups: the 'Toshavim,' the original inhabitants, and the 'Megorashim,' Sephardic refugees who arrived following the 1492 Alhambra Decree, which expelled Jews from Spain and Portugal.
Historically, Moroccan Jews lived in 'mellahs'—specialized neighborhoods. While some interpret these as attempts at isolation, many historians view them as a means of protection provided by Sultans. Under the Islamic legal system, Jews were classified as 'dhimmis,' a protected religious minority. This status allowed them to maintain their own legal courts and 'halakha' law, fostering a unique system of coexistence alongside Muslim and Christian communities.
The 20th century brought seismic shifts. Following the establishment of Israel in 1948, and through initiatives like Operation Yachin (1961–1964), large waves of emigration occurred. The population, which was between 250,000 and 350,000 in the 1950s, dwindled to approximately 2,500 by the late 20th century. Today, while the community in Morocco is small, the connection remains strong; over 50,000 Moroccan Jews from Israel visit Morocco annually.
Morocco has taken significant steps to preserve this heritage. The 2011 constitutional referendum affirmed the Jewish community as a constitutive part of the Moroccan nation. The kingdom has restored 110 synagogues and hosts the Arab world's only Jewish museum, ensuring that the traditions of music, cuisine, and liturgy continue to be celebrated.
