In short: In 1981, Heckler & Koch introduced the G41, a masterpiece of roller-delayed engineering designed to modernize NATO standards. Yet, despite its advanced mechanics and lineage from the legendary G3, the rifle never secured a major military contract, ultimately becoming a specialized tool for elite units rather than a global standard.

The G41's engineering is rooted in a complex roller-delayed blowback system, a mechanism derived from the StG 45(M) and the successful G3 battle rifle. This system relies on precise geometric relationships between a wedge-shaped locking piece and cylindrical rollers. During firing, the bolt head carrier moves at a predetermined, faster ratio than the bolt head itself, delaying the rearward motion of the bolt head until the rollers retract. This mechanical precision allowed the rifle to handle 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition, including SS109, SS110, and SS111, while remaining compatible with older .223 Remington M193 rounds.

Despite its technical sophistication, the G41 faced significant commercial hurdles. It was rejected by various military trial programs and failed to win major production contracts. In 1989, when the German Bundeswehr rejected the rifle, the more successful Beretta AR70/90 was selected in 1990. Furthermore, while the G41 utilized lighter 1.0 mm high-tensile steel for its receiver, the rifle's overall weight actually exceeded that of its predecessor, the HK33, making it relatively heavy compared to other 5.56mm assault rifles of its era.

While it missed the mass market, the G41 found a niche in specialized roles. The Italian manufacturer Luigi Franchi acquired the production rights and produced sample runs, such as the LF G41, which saw use by the Italian COMSUBIN commando frogmen. Other specialized adopters included the Argentine Air Force's Grupo de Operaciones Especiales, Denmark's Frogman and Jaeger Corps, and Spain's GEO counter-terrorist unit, which utilizes the G41TGS variant equipped with a 40 mm grenade launcher.
