How a failed patent dispute birthed the German Army's new standard issue rifle
In short: The Heckler & Koch G95 is not just a new weapon; it is the culmination of decades of engineering refinement. Born from a quest for reliability in special forces, this rifle replaces the aging G36, utilizing a proprietary piston system that keeps internal components cleaner and cooler during heavy combat.
The G95 lineage traces back to the 1990s, when U.S. Army Delta Force sought a superior close-quarters carbine. They required a platform more reliable than the existing M4 and more potent than the 9mm MP5. Heckler & Koch answered by merging the AR-15 architecture with the short-stroke gas piston system from their G36 rifle. This design prevents hot combustion gases from fouling the bolt carrier group, a common failure point in traditional direct impingement systems. During factory testing, this configuration successfully fired 10,000 rounds in full-auto without a single malfunction.
The transition to the G95 as the Bundeswehr's standard service rifle was a complex, multi-year process. In 2017, Germany launched the System Sturmgewehr Bundeswehr initiative to replace the G36, which faced accuracy concerns linked to thermal expansion. While a competitor, C.G. Haenel, initially won the contract in 2020, the decision was overturned following patent infringement allegations. By 2021, the HK416A8 variant was selected, and in 2022, the Bundestag approved funding for procurement. The resulting G95A1 and G95KA1 models were officially issued to troops in 2025.
Modernization defines the G95's ergonomics and modularity. The rifle features a free-floating barrel for improved accuracy and an M-LOK rail system for attaching modern accessories. Every detail, from the ambidextrous controls to the cold hammer-forged barrel—rated for a 20,000-round service life—is designed for durability and ease of use. The standard configuration for the German Army, the G95KA1, utilizes a 355 mm barrel, while the G95A1 offers a 419 mm barrel for increased velocity. With potential plans to expand the inventory to 500,000 units, the G95 is set to be the backbone of German defense for years to come.
