The aircraft that played a Nazi plane in a British movie
In short: The Hispano Aviación HA-1112 is a masterclass in aeronautical improvisation. Born from a failed German license agreement during WWII, this Spanish aircraft became so convincing that it spent decades masquerading as a Messerschmitt Bf 109 in Hollywood blockbusters.
The HA-1112's lineage began with a 1942 manufacturing license from Messerschmitt for the Bf 109 G-2. However, Germany was unable to supply the necessary DB 605A engines or even half the required drawings. Forced to innovate, Spanish engineers replaced the German powerplant with a 1,300 hp Hispano-Suiza HS 89-12Z engine. This swap was so effective that the aircraft was renamed the Bf 109 J by the original manufacturer, though it remained a distinct Spanish evolution.
Technological quirks defined the aircraft's personality. The HA-1112-K1L variant featured an upright V12 engine, unlike the inverted V12s used by the Luftwaffe. Because the original Bf 109 airframe retained an asymmetrical tail-fin designed to counteract clockwise torque, the counter-clockwise rotation of the Hispano engine induced a difficult-to-manage right swing during takeoff. Despite these mechanical oddities, the plane was robust enough to serve as a primary trainer and colonial patrol aircraft in Africa.
Acquired from UK stocks, a 1,600 hp Rolls-Royce Merlin 500-45 motor powered the ultimate HA-1112-M1L 'Buchón' model. This engine featured a chin intake that noticeably altered the iconic Bf 109 silhouette. Because of its visual similarity, the Buchón became a staple of cinema, appearing in films like 'Battle of Britain' and 'Dunkirk'. Even in 'Battle of Britain', it was used to portray both the German opposition and the Hawker Hurricane.
The aircraft's longevity is remarkable; the Buchón remained in service until December 27, 1965. Today, it exists in a strange duality: hundreds remain on static display across the globe, while many others have been meticulously restored by private collectors to perfectly replicate the appearance of the legendary German fighter it was never meant to be.
