A leaked letter and a rumor sparked a violent indigenous uprising
In short: In 1792, a single rumor about a secret Spanish letter transformed a period of relatively peaceful expansion into a bloody conflict. The Huilliche people rose up against the Spanish penetration into their territory, leading to a brutal military campaign that reshaped the borders of southern Chile.
By the mid-18th century, the Spanish enclave of Valdivia began expanding southward into Futahuillimapu, a territory that had been largely free of Spanish rule since 1602. While much of this expansion was initially peaceful—involving land purchases, racial mixing, and the conversion of indigenous proprietors into bonded laborers—tensions simmered. The Spanish were driven by a strategic goal: connecting Valdivia to the Chiloé Archipelago via a road to ensure mutual aid against potential European invasions.
The catalyst for violence was a rumor spread by a man named Felipe. He asserted that a message from the Valdivia Governor to the Río Bueno mission leader had been acquired by him. The letter allegedly revealed a sinister intent: to lull the indigenous people into a false sense of peace while secretly planning to kill their warriors and enslave the population. This sparked a violent uprising in September 1792, characterized by the torching of houses, theft of livestock, and the killing of Spanish settlers, messengers, and priests.
The Spanish response was swift and severe. Under the command of Tomás de Figueroa, a militia departed from Valdivia on October 3, 1792. Upon reaching the conflict zone, Figueroa executed the local cacique Manquepán and seventeen of his men after suspecting their friendly demeanor was a tactic to avoid retribution. The campaign ravaged Huilliche territory until January 1793. The struggle finished via the Las Canoas Parliament, where a pact granted the Spanish Osorno's restoration and passage rights, whereas the Huilliches kept significant self-rule over their leftover territories.
